Rock Climbs: Leavenworth & Darrington

I recently completed a four-day climbing binge: Friday at Index, Saturday in Leavenworth, and Sunday-Monday in Darrington.

Friday's report's been posted. On Saturday Rick and I went to L-worth to do the Tree Route (5.6) - first time for Rick, sixth time for me. Started the morning off with a flat tire, so we arrived in Icicle Canyon two hours late. The climb went well - Rick was challenged by the off-width crack on pitch three, but he really enjoyed the route. I like hanging with Rick - he's got a great sense of humor and gung-ho attitude - makes for good times. :)

Bloody knees mean you're working hard!

Sunday Kurt and I hiked to Three O'Clock Rock in Darrington and climbed Till Broad Daylight to the third belay of The Kone (5.8). We were both happy to get some slab climbing under our feet before Yosemite.

Monday I went back to Three O'Clock Rock with Katrina and Payge to climb Total Soul (5.10b). This is a serious (Grade III+) multi-pitch climb (8 total - many over 100 feet). An all dayer fer sure. I'd yet to make it beyond pitch five and really didn't expect to this time either - the main goal was to get some extended pitch climbing experience in prep for Yosemite. Katrina and I swung leads on the first four pitches - that was fun since I've been doing most of the leading this year. I led pitch five via the 5.10b "Anti-fly" variation from the Batman Bush to the Ant Farm ledge. Half-way up I began to wonder what I was doing leading a 5.10b 500 feet off the deck on my fourth straight day of climbing! S'pose I could have done the most difficult route on my first day - oh well - was a confidence booster to climb hard even when I was tiring. We rapped off pitch five after 6 hours and 600 feet of climbing. An hour later we were at the base and on our way to the car - a long, fun day.
