Rock & Ice 2005

I look forward to Tall Timber's Rock & Ice Caravan every year. I first started attending as a camper back in '91. This was now my twelfth caravan and third as a volunteer leader. We spent four days rock climbing in Smith Rock, Oregon and finished with a climb of Mount Adams. We had a great group of campers this year. Though they didn't have much experience, they had great attitudes and adventurous spirits. We had a great time together.

Smith was hot. To minimized the effects of the heat, we climbed early, took a long break in the afternoon, and went back out to climb in the evening shade.

Highlights for me were climbing Cinnamon Slab (5.6)/Cinnamon Toast (5.8) and Zebra-Zion (5.10-) at Smith. Mt. Adams was fun the second time around. We camped on the mountain and were treated to a spectacular sunset. Mt. St. Helens even let off a puff of steam - everyone got a kick out of that. Summit day was perfect; everyone made it to the top and enjoyed the long glissade down. Good times!
