Rock Climb: The Country

In preparation for Yosemite, Dallas and I went climbing at Index this morning. We headed out to the area by the tunnel known as The Country and warmed up on S.S. Ultrabrutal (5.7), which I lead. We then moved on over to the GM route where I took on the first 5.8 pitch. The crux is right off the start - some sketchy balancy moves before gaining a bomber jug. Dallas lead the second pitch, a challenging series of 5.9 liebacks and overhanging flakes. It looks intimidating from below, but after some hard grunts, Dallas gained the anchors. I was a little worried at climbing my first Index 5.9, but since I wasn't on lead I was free to concentrate solely on climbing. I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable pitch and I climbed it well. My technique was good and I was able to find several good rest positions for cleaning gear. My success gave me confidence that I might be up to climbing in Yosemite after all. Wouldn't mind coming back and leading that 5.9 pitch at some point. Dallas and I are planning to return to Index next weekend, weather willing. Yosemite's only 2-1/2 weeks away!
